WORSHIP WITH US

Church of the Transfiguration is a congregation of the Episcopal Church and a member of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago. In keeping with the tradition of the Episcopal Church, our worship centers around the Book of Common Prayer. There is an old joke among Episcopalians that when someone asks us what we believe our response is to invite them to pray with us. For Episcopalians, our mutual life of worship defines us far more than any particular dogma. We are a big tent with room for many different perspectives on theological minutiae, but at the end of the day, we come together to hear Scripture and to gather around the Lord’s Table to receive the Sacrament of Communion, holy food to sustain us through this journey of life. All are welcome at our table to receive the gifts of God so freely given.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON SUNDAY MORNINGS

As part a liturgical tradition, our services are rich and robust, structured around the different seasons of the Church Calendar. We say together the prayers of the church, some of which have been in use for hundreds of years. We hear Scripture to focus our hearts on Christ and prepare us to gather around the altar rail for Holy Communion. We have a small but mighty choir that provides lovely music, mostly comprised of tradition Episcopal hymns, but we are branching out into other musical expressions as well. Despite out liturgical foundations, the spirit of our services is not fussy or stuffy. We have a very warm and down to earth congregation that does not take itself too seriously, and of course, Sunday mornings would not be complete without our coffee hour after service.

SERMONS

In the Episcopal Church, the sermon is part of the Liturgy of the Word, which precedes the Liturgy of the Table. At Transfiguration, the sermon is less a lecture and more a time to prepare our hearts to receive the gifts of God at Communion. Additionally, our sermons focus on what it means to live out our faith in the world. We call people to act out of love for God and their neighbor, to stand with those on the margins and speak truth to power.
